History of Rush Street – THE STREET

Declaration of Independence. Rush Street’s history traces back to the 1830s when it was a major corridor of commerce. The Rush Street Bridge across the main branch of the Chicago River was a commercial port location from the mid-19th century until the 1920s.

But, commerce on the Chicago River started a long, slow decline and the Michigan Avenue Bridge was officially opened in 1920. Today, Rush Street has been reinvented and has become one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country and hosts highly rated restaurants, five-star hotels, and prominent bars that attract locals and visitors.
